Fluval 207 Review

The small-tank member of Fluval's 07 series: the same quiet pump and EZ-Lift baskets as the 407, sized and priced for a 60–200 L tank. The canister we reach for first on a mid-size setup.

👍 Pros

  • Same 07-series pump as the bigger models — up to 25% quieter than the old 206
  • EZ-Lift media baskets lift the whole stack out in one movement for fast cleaning
  • Aquastop valve disconnects the hoses without draining the canister
  • Draws very little power for the flow it delivers

👎 Cons

  • 780 L/h is comfortable, not huge — do not overstock a 220 L tank on it alone
  • Needs cabinet space below the tank like any canister
  • Priming takes a few pumps after a media clean

The 407’s talents in a smaller body

The Fluval 207 is what you buy when your tank is too big for a hang-on-back but does not need the flagship Fluval 407. It shares the 07-series pump — up to 25% quieter than the old 206 — and the same EZ-Lift media baskets that raise the whole stack out in one movement. What changes is scale: 780 L/h and around 3.9 L of media, sized for a 60–220 L tank rather than a 500 L one.

Sizing it honestly

Fluval’s 220 L ceiling assumes light stocking. Use the 4× turnover rule — filter roughly four times your tank volume every hour — and the 207 comfortably serves up to about 190 L. For a lightly-stocked 200 L it is still fine; for a heavily-stocked one, size up rather than run the 207 flat out. The Aquastop valve and self-priming pump make water-change day genuinely painless, which is the real reason to pay for a canister at this size.

Where it sits in the range

Smaller tank? A hang-on-back like the AquaClear 50 filters a 190 L tank without any under-cabinet plumbing. Bigger or heavily planted display? Step up to the Fluval 407 for far more flow and media. For the full line-up and the turnover maths, see our aquarium filters hub, and match the filter to the right tank on our aquariums page.

⚖️ The bottom line

The canister to buy for a mid-size tank. It brings the 407's quiet pump and one-lift baskets down to a 60–220 L footprint and price, and nothing at this size services more easily.

Fluval 207 — frequently asked questions

What size tank suits the Fluval 207?

Fluval rates it 60–220 L, and the honest sweet spot is a 90–180 L community or planted tank. Aim for roughly 4× your tank volume per hour in turnover — the 207's 780 L/h covers that up to about 190 L. Push past 200 L with heavy stock and you should size up to the 307 or 407 instead.

How is the 207 different from the 407?

Same design and pump technology, different capacity. The 407 pushes 1450 L/h and holds far more media for tanks up to 500 L; the 207 is the smaller, cheaper version for mid-size tanks. If your tank is under about 200 L, the 207 saves money and cabinet space without giving up the tool-free servicing.

Do I keep the stock carbon in it?

The mechanical foams and biological media are the core of any canister. Many keepers swap some of the stock carbon for extra bio media, since chemical media such as carbon is optional and only needed for specific jobs like clearing tannins or medication.
