How is an AquaClear different from a cartridge hang-on filter?
Most HOBs use disposable cartridges you throw away — which also throws away your biological bacteria. The AquaClear uses a big refillable basket you pack with your own foam, carbon and bio media. You only rinse or replace one stage at a time, so your bacteria colony survives and running costs are far lower.
Can I turn the flow down?
Yes — there is a flow-control slider on the intake. That is handy for a lightly-planted tank, for shrimp, or for slow-swimming fish like bettas that dislike a strong current, while still giving the 4× turnover you want for clean water.
Is the AquaClear 50 noisy?
It is quiet when set up right. Nearly all HOB noise is either the outlet splashing into a low water level or a dirty impeller. Keep the tank topped up and give the impeller a clean every month or two and it runs to a gentle trickle.
