Fluval aquarium gear

The all-rounder that equips most planted tanks from tank to filter to light.

Fluval is the aquarium arm of Canada's Hagen group, and one of the few brands you can build a whole planted tank around. Strong on canister filters, LED lighting and all-in-one kits.

OriginCanada (Rolf C. Hagen) · since 1975 Best known forcanister filters, LED lighting & all-in-one tanks

Fluval is the aquarium brand of Rolf C. Hagen, a Canadian family business that has sold fishkeeping gear since the 1970s. It is one of the most complete ranges on the market: you can furnish an entire planted tank — the glass, the filter, the heater, the light and the food — without leaving the Fluval catalogue. That breadth is a big part of why it turns up so often in beginner and intermediate setups.

What they are genuinely best at

The 07-series canister filters (107/207/307/407) are the workhorse most people know Fluval for. They are quiet, easy to prime, and the flow ratings are honest enough that sizing a tank is straightforward. The Plant 3.0 LED is a deservedly popular light: full-spectrum, app-controllable, and bright enough to grow medium-demand plants without stepping up to a premium aquascaping unit. Fluval also makes some of the better-value all-in-one nano and shrimp tanks, which take a lot of the guesswork out of a first setup.

See where they fit across our aquarium filters, aquarium lighting and aquariums hubs.

Where they fit — and the honest caveats

Fluval sits in the mid-range: better built and better supported than budget brands, without the price (or the near-silence) of German engineering like Eheim or Oase. For a first or second planted tank it is hard to go wrong.

Two fair caveats. First, spare parts and media are proprietary and priced accordingly — running costs add up over the years. Second, the range is wide, and quality is not perfectly uniform across it; the canisters and lights are excellent, while some of the cheaper internal filters and heaters are ordinary. Buy Fluval for its strong lines rather than assuming every product carries the same pedigree, and it remains one of the safest all-round choices in the hobby.
