Is the Fluval Q.5 quieter than a Tetra Whisper?
Marginally, in most setups. Both use a suspended-motor design to damp vibration, but the Q.5 is a slightly more refined, better-damped unit and tends to run a touch quieter and steadier — which is why it costs a little more. The bigger factor is still how you install it: sit any pump on a foam pad, keep it above the water line or fit a check valve, and the differences between good pumps shrink.
What does the service module do?
The diaphragm and internal parts that wear out live in a replaceable module. When the pump eventually gets noisy or weak after a year or two of use, you swap the module instead of binning the whole pump — cheaper and less wasteful. Do I still need a check valve?
