Seachem Flourite Black is the substrate for planted keepers who do not want a countdown timer on their soil. It is a specially fracted, porous fired-clay gravel — inert, pH-neutral, and effectively permanent. There is no ammonia leaching to cycle out and no buffering swing to manage. What the clay does bring is a naturally high iron content and a porous structure that roots and beneficial bacteria colonise readily, so it is a real step up from plain aquarium gravel for growing plants.
The trade-off versus an active soil is simple: Flourite carries no big up-front nutrient charge, so you feed the tank yourself with root tabs and liquid fertiliser from the start. In return it never runs out and never needs replacing.
The one job you must not skip
Flourite is notoriously dusty. Straight from the bag the fine clay will turn your water inky black for days if you are impatient. Rinse it hard, in small batches, until the runoff is mostly clear — it takes a while, but it is the difference between a clear tank on day one and a week of frustration. Once it is in and settled, it is about as low-maintenance as a substrate gets.

Does Flourite Black work like an active soil?
No. Flourite is inert — it does not lower pH and it does not leach ammonia, so there is no start-up cycle to ride out. It also has no big nutrient charge waiting in the grain, so unlike an aqua soil you feed the tank yourself with root tabs and liquid ferts. Its advantage is that it is permanent and never runs out of steam.
Do I need to cap it or can I use it on its own?
Use it on its own — it is a complete planted gravel, not a base layer to be capped. The one job you must not skip is rinsing: Flourite is very dusty, and unrinsed it turns the water black for days. Rinse it in batches until the water runs mostly clear before it goes in.
Will it ever wear out or need re-mineralising?
The grain itself is fired clay and lasts indefinitely, so there is no one-to-two-year replacement clock like an active soil. Because it starts fairly lean, though, you keep heavy root-feeders happy by pushing root tabs near them and dosing a balanced liquid fertiliser throughout its life.
