CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Review

A mineral-rich black volcanic substrate shipped wet with live bacteria — it feeds roots and never breaks down, giving planted-tank looks without the acidic swing or one-to-two-year lifespan of an active soil.

👍 Pros

  • Loaded with iron, calcium, magnesium and trace minerals plants draw on for years
  • Ships damp with live heterotrophic bacteria to help kick-start the biological cycle
  • Does not break down or need replacing — a genuinely permanent substrate
  • Deep natural black colour makes fish and plant colour pop

👎 Cons

  • Does not buffer pH, so it will not soften water for shrimp or acidophilic fish
  • The bagged liquid is messy to pour off and looks alarming the first time
  • Heavier, coarser grain is less ideal for the finest carpeting plants than a soil

A permanent alternative to aqua soil

Active soils are brilliant, but they come with a clock — after a year or two the buffering fades and you are re-mineralising or rebuilding. CaribSea Eco-Complete takes the opposite approach. It is a mineralogically rich black volcanic substrate, packed with iron, calcium, magnesium and a long list of trace elements, that feeds roots without ever breaking down. There is no acidic swing and no ammonia leaching, so it is easy to live with from day one.

It ships damp in a bag of liquid that carries live heterotrophic bacteria, the idea being to give your biological filter a head start. Pour off the water — it looks worse than it is — add the substrate and fill the tank gently.

What it does and does not do

The important honest caveat: Eco-Complete does not buffer pH. It will not soften your water toward the acidic side, so if your goal is a Caridina shrimp tank or blackwater fish, an active soil is the right tool. What Eco-Complete gives you instead is a permanent, nutrient-rich, great-looking base for a planted community tank — the deep black grain makes colour pop and it never needs replacing. Heavy root-feeders like swords and crypts will still enjoy the occasional root tab down the line.

How it compares

Want genuine pH softening and the fastest plant establishment? Step up to the active Tropica Aquarium Soil, accepting its finite lifespan. Prefer an even simpler inert option for a fish-focused tank? Natural CaribSea Peace River gravel is cheaper still. Browse the full range on the aquarium substrate hub, and match your build on the aquariums page.

⚖️ The bottom line

The pick when you want a rich planted look that lasts forever and keeps pH stable. It will not soften water like an active soil, but for a permanent community setup that is often exactly what you want.

CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted — frequently asked questions

Is Eco-Complete an active soil or an inert substrate?

It sits in between. Unlike an active soil such as Tropica it does not lower pH or leach ammonia, so in that sense it behaves like an inert base. But it is mineralogically rich — full of iron and trace elements — so it feeds roots far better than plain gravel or sand. Think of it as a permanent, nutrient-loaded base rather than a true buffering soil.

Do I need to rinse it or add a nutrient cap?

Do not rinse it — that would wash away the bagged bacteria and mineral fines. Pour off the liquid, add the substrate and fill gently. It is a complete base used on its own; no cap is needed. Its heavier grain also means it will not cloud the way a light soil does.

Will the nutrients run out like an active soil?

Much more slowly. Eco-Complete does not decompose, so it does not have the one-to-two-year clock of an aqua soil. Over the long term heavy root-feeders will still appreciate the odd root tab, but you never have to tear it down and replace it.
