Why is the Eheim Classic still recommended after all these years?
Because it simply does not break. The single-chamber design has almost nothing to fail, the seals and impeller are cheap to replace, and the pump is famously quiet. It is the classic buy-it-once canister for a tank up to around 250 L.
Is 440 L/h enough for a 250 L tank?
It is at the lower end. Using the 4× turnover guideline, a 250 L tank ideally wants nearer 1000 L/h, so treat the Classic 250 as best for a moderately-stocked tank up to ~180–200 L, or pair it with good surface agitation on a bigger, lightly-stocked setup.
Does it come with media?
The standard bundle includes Eheim's foam pads and often a bag of bio media, but because it is one open chamber you can pack it however you like — coarse to fine mechanical first, then biological, with chemical media only when you need it.
