The test kit and treatment brand almost every fishkeeper starts with.

API (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, now part of Mars Fishcare) makes the ubiquitous Freshwater Master Test Kit plus a broad range of treatments. The default starting point for beginner water care.

OriginUSA (Mars Fishcare) Best known forthe ubiquitous Freshwater Master test kit & treatments

API β€” Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, now owned by Mars Fishcare β€” is the brand most people meet on their very first trip to the fish store. It built its reputation on affordable, widely stocked water-care products, and one item above all: the Freshwater Master Test Kit, which has probably tested more new aquariums than any other product in the hobby.

What they are genuinely best at

The Master Test Kit’s strength is coverage and value. In one box you get liquid-reagent tests for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate β€” the four readings that actually matter during cycling β€” at a price that undercuts buying them separately. Liquid reagents are also more accurate and far cheaper per test than dip strips, which makes the kit ideal for the daily testing a new tank needs. API’s Stress Coat, Quick Start bacteria and a shelf of medications fill out a range aimed squarely at everyday problems.

See where they sit in our water testing hub, and pair testing with the routines in our aquarium maintenance hub.

Where they fit β€” and the honest caveats

API is the beginner’s default, and rightly so β€” it is cheap, universally available and does the core job well. For a first year of fishkeeping it is all most people need.

The honest caveats are about precision and process. The nitrate test in particular is notorious for needing vigorous shaking of the second bottle for a full minute or it reads low; colour-matching against the chart is subjective under poor lighting; and the results are ranges, not lab-grade numbers. Some of the medications are also broad-spectrum and better used deliberately than as a first reflex. Used carefully β€” shake hard, read in daylight β€” API remains the most sensible entry point into water testing.
