Are liquid test kits really more accurate than strips?
Yes. Liquid reagent kits like this one react in a measured water sample and give a clearer, more repeatable colour, so they resolve small changes strips miss — especially low ammonia and nitrite during cycling. Strips are faster and fine for a quick weekly glance, but for the readings that decide whether fish are safe, liquid is the standard.
Which readings matter when cycling a new tank?
Track the cycle in order: ammonia rises first, then nitrite as bacteria convert it, then nitrate as a second colony takes over. A finished cycle reads 0 ppm ammonia and 0 ppm nitrite with some nitrate present. This kit covers all three, so it is the one tool that tells you when a new tank is safe to stock.
Why does my nitrate reading look off?
The nitrate test is the fussy one. Bottle #2 settles, so you must shake it hard for about 30 seconds and bang it on the table before dosing, then shake the capped tube for a full minute. Skip that and it reads artificially low. Follow the timing in the booklet and it is reliable.
