Overview

The leopard danio (Danio rerio) is a spotted colour form of the ever-popular zebra danio, scattered with dark speckles over a gold-silver body. Tough, cheap, fast and endlessly active, it is one of the best-known beginner fish and one of the few that happily handles cooler, subtropical water. Kept as a shoal in a long tank, it is a tireless, lively swimmer.

Tank & water

These are restless sprinters, so give a shoal at least 75 litres (20 gallons) with plenty of length. Key points:

  • Temperature: subtropical and hardy across 18–24 °C, tolerating cool rooms; a heater helps in fluctuating conditions.
  • Water: very adaptable at pH 6.5–8.0 across soft to hard water.
  • Filtration and flow: they love current — a filter that turns the water over well mimics their stream habitat.
  • A lid: they are keen jumpers, so always cover the tank.
Length over height: leopard danios need horizontal swimming room. A long, open tank with some flow keeps a shoal healthy and stops boredom-driven fin-nipping.

Feeding

Leopard danios are unfussy omnivores. A quality flake or micro-pellet staple suits them, with frozen or live foods — daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp — as treats. They feed eagerly at the surface and mid-water. Feed small amounts once or twice a day and avoid overfeeding these enthusiastic eaters.

Tankmates

Match their pace with active, robust fish: zebra danios, white cloud mountain minnows, cherry barbs, larger tetras and peaceful corydoras. Avoid slow, long-finned fish that will be nipped by such fast movers. Keep a shoal of six or more — see best community fish for beginners.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Keeping too few, which makes them nip fins
  • A short tank that cramps their swimming
  • Pairing them with slow, fancy-finned fish
  • Leaving the tank uncovered

Give leopard danios a long, flowing tank and a proper shoal and they are among the hardiest, most energetic starter fish you can keep.

Leopard danio — frequently asked questions

Is the leopard danio the same as the zebra danio?

Essentially yes. The leopard danio is a spotted colour form of the zebra danio (Danio rerio), with the same hardy nature, care needs and behaviour. The two even interbreed freely, and mixed shoals are common.

Do leopard danios need a heater?

Not always. They are subtropical and thrive at 18–24 °C, so a warm room may keep them fine unheated. A heater still helps in cool or fluctuating rooms, and they will tolerate the low-to-mid 20s of a typical tropical tank.

Why are my leopard danios so fast?

They are naturally energetic, restless swimmers built for flowing streams. A long tank with open water and a proper shoal lets them burn that energy; too small a group or tank makes them nippy and stressed.
