The leopard danio (Danio rerio) is a spotted colour form of the ever-popular zebra danio, scattered with dark speckles over a gold-silver body. Tough, cheap, fast and endlessly active, it is one of the best-known beginner fish and one of the few that happily handles cooler, subtropical water. Kept as a shoal in a long tank, it is a tireless, lively swimmer.

These are restless sprinters, so give a shoal at least 75 litres (20 gallons) with plenty of length. Key points:
- Temperature: subtropical and hardy across 18–24 °C, tolerating cool rooms; a heater helps in fluctuating conditions.
- Water: very adaptable at pH 6.5–8.0 across soft to hard water.

Feeding
Leopard danios are unfussy omnivores. A quality flake or micro-pellet staple suits them, with frozen or live foods — daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp — as treats. They feed eagerly at the surface and mid-water. Feed small amounts once or twice a day and avoid overfeeding these enthusiastic eaters.
Tankmates
