Overview

The gardneri killifish (Fundulopanchax gardneri) is the friendliest doorway into the killifish world — a hardy, adaptable West African fish where males blaze in electric blue and red spots with yellow-edged fins. Unlike the fragile blackwater killies, the gardneri tolerates a wide range of conditions, breeds readily and even accepts prepared foods, which makes it a genuinely beginner-friendly killifish. At 5–6 cm it is well suited to a small planted species tank.

Tank & water

A trio does well in a planted tank of at least 40 litres (10 gallons).

  • Temperature: hold 22–26 °C with a small heater.
  • Water: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard — adaptable, but test with a kit.
  • Gentle filtration: a soft sponge filter suits them, plus regular water changes.
  • Aquascape: dense planting, wood and floating cover give security and territory boundaries.
Tight lid, please: like most killifish, gardneri are accomplished jumpers. Keep the tank well covered, and add them only to a fully cycled setup.

Feeding

Gardneri killifish are carnivores that relish live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, blackworm and mosquito larvae. Many individuals also accept quality frozen or freeze-dried foods and some prepared flakes, which is unusual among killies and adds to their easy reputation. A varied meaty diet keeps their colour vivid and condition strong. Feed small amounts once or twice daily.

Tankmates

Gardneri are peaceful toward other species and best kept as a single male with several females, or in a species tank. In a larger community they mix with small, calm, non-nippy fish that share their conditions, though many keepers prefer to keep killifish on their own to enjoy the colours and breeding. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates. Check stocking with how many fish in an aquarium.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • An open or loosely covered tank — the surest way to lose a killifish
  • Keeping multiple males in a small tank without sight breaks
  • Relying only on dry food when they thrive on live and frozen
  • Assuming “hardy” means they don’t need clean, stable water

For a tinier, more specialised killifish, compare the surface-dwelling clown killifish, which needs softer, blackwater conditions and a species-tank approach.

Gardneri killifish — frequently asked questions

Are gardneri killifish good for beginners to killifish?

Yes — the gardneri is often the recommended first killifish. It is hardier and more adaptable than many killies, accepting a wide range of water conditions and even dry foods in some cases. It is colourful, active and readily bred, making it a great introduction to the killifish group.

Do gardneri killifish need special water?

They are adaptable, tolerating pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water, which is part of why they are beginner-friendly for killies. Stable, clean conditions matter more than exact numbers. Even so, test your source water with a kit and keep up regular water changes.

Can I keep more than one male gardneri killifish?

Males are feisty toward one another and will spar over territory. In a small tank keep a single male with two or three females (a trio or harem). In a larger, well-planted tank with sight breaks, multiple males can work, but watch for one being bullied and add cover.
