Electric blue ram
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
advanced careOverview
The electric blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is the dazzling colour form of the German blue ram — a dwarf cichlid barely 5 cm long, bred to glow almost solid electric blue. It is stunning, but it is not a hardy community filler. Like all Ramirez rams it is a warm-water, soft-water specialist that punishes an immature tank or careless water changes, and the intensive breeding behind its colour can make it a touch more delicate still. Kept properly, a bonded pair is a jewel-like, dig-and-forage centrepiece.
Tank & water
Give a pair at least 57 litres (15 gallons) of a fully matured, cycled tank — never a fresh setup.
- Heat, high and steady: hold 27–29 °C with a reliable heater. See what temperature a tropical tank should be.
- Soft and acidic: aim for pH 5.5–6.5 and low hardness. Test first with a kit; adjusting water is covered in raising or lowering pH.
- Pristine, gentle: a well-matured filter with soft flow and consistent water changes.
- Planted and shaded: plants, wood and leaf litter give the security that keeps rams confident and colourful.
Feeding
Electric blue rams are omnivores that lean meaty. Offer small, high-quality sinking micro foods plus regular frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. They forage the substrate, so a fine sand bed suits their natural sifting. Feed small amounts once or twice daily.
Tankmates
Choose calm, warm-tolerant companions: small tetras, rasboras, corydoras and other peaceful, heat-loving fish. Avoid fin-nippers, boisterous barbs and anything that outcompetes them at feeding time. A single bonded pair is ideal; more rams need space to reduce squabbles. Check stocking with how many fish in an aquarium.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding them to a fresh, uncycled or immature tank
- Running the tank too cool at a typical community 24 °C
- Keeping them in hard, alkaline tap water without testing first
- Expecting a long life — 2–3 years is normal even done well
Want a hardier alternative that keeps the colour and shape? The German blue ram has the same needs, while the Bolivian ram is far more forgiving of cooler, harder water and a good choice for a less experienced keeper.
Electric blue ram — frequently asked questions
Is the electric blue ram the same as a German blue ram?
Yes — the electric blue ram is a selectively bred colour form of the German blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), enhanced for an almost solid electric-blue body. Care is identical: warm, soft, stable water and a fully matured tank. Line-bred fish can be a touch more delicate, so buy from a reputable source.
Are electric blue rams hard to keep?
They are demanding for their size. Like all Ramirez rams they need warm (27–29 °C), soft, acidic, pristine water and a mature tank — an uncycled setup, cool temperatures or big swings kill them quickly. They suit an experienced keeper with cycling and water-change routines already dialled in.
Why do electric blue rams have such short lifespans?
Two to three years is normal even with good care. Their high preferred temperature speeds metabolism and ageing, and intensive line-breeding for colour can reduce hardiness. Warm, soft, stable water and a clean, mature tank give them the best and longest life you can offer.
