Overview

The common pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus) is sold everywhere as a tiny “algae eater” — and that is the problem. This fish grows to 30–45 cm and lives well over a decade, turning into a huge, waste-producing tankbuster that outgrows nearly every home aquarium. It is a peaceful, hardy animal, but it is honestly the wrong fish for most keepers. If you don’t have a very large tank, choose the bristlenose pleco instead.

Tank & water

Be realistic: an adult common pleco needs a very large tank — around 450 litres (120 gallons) or more. Keep 22–28 °C with heavy-duty filtration, because a fish this size produces enormous amounts of waste.

  • Space and hides: large driftwood and a big cave for a fish that spans the tank floor.
  • Powerful filtration and maintenance: frequent water changes are non-negotiable — see aquarium maintenance.
  • Plan for its adult size: don’t buy on impulse — read how many fish in an aquarium.
Not a tank cleaner: a common pleco adds a massive bioload rather than reducing work, and won't cure algae — see how to get rid of aquarium algae.

Feeding

Adults are omnivores and, as they grow, eat less algae and more of everything. Feed sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables and sinking pellets, with driftwood to rasp on. See the fish food hub and our best fish food picks. A large pleco eats a lot and messes accordingly.

Tankmates

Generally peaceful, the common pleco suits large-tank communities with robust fish that won’t be bothered by its size. Large adults may become territorial and can occasionally rasp on the sides of broad, flat-bodied fish. It is a poor match for small nano species and delicate shrimp. For a peaceful community, the smaller bristlenose or clown pleco is a far better fit.

Buy with your eyes open: only take this fish on if you can house a 30–45 cm animal for 10–15 years.

Frequently asked questions

The common pleco is a fine fish in the right home — a very large tank — but the wrong one almost everywhere it’s sold. For a normal aquarium, pick a bristlenose and skip the tankbuster.

Common pleco — frequently asked questions

How big does a common pleco really get?

Very big — 30–45 cm as an adult, and it can live 10 to 15 years or more. That cute 8 cm fish in the shop grows into a foot-and-a-half-long tankbuster that outgrows almost every home aquarium. Buy it only if you can house it long term.

What size tank does a common pleco need?

An adult needs a very large tank — realistically 450 litres (120 gallons) or more, with powerful filtration. It is not a fish for a standard community tank, and it should never be sold as a cleaner for a small setup.

Should I get a common pleco or a bristlenose?

For almost everyone, a bristlenose pleco. It stays around 10–13 cm, fits a 75-litre tank for life and grazes algae just as well. Choose the common pleco only if you genuinely have a very large aquarium.
