Cherry Shrimp vs Crystal Red Shrimp

Both are beautiful colony shrimp, but they sit at opposite ends of the difficulty scale. The cherry shrimp is the hardy beginner's Neocaridina; the crystal red shrimp is a premium Caridina that demands soft, acidic water. Here's which is right for you.

The quick verdict

If this is your first shrimp tank, or you want to keep things simple, choose the cherry shrimp — it thrives in ordinary stable water and breeds freely. If you have a stable, cycled tank and want a striking premium shrimp, and you're happy to run RO water and an active substrate, the crystal red shrimp is a rewarding step up.

Hardy beginner vs premium specialist

The cherry shrimp forgives a lot: stable tap water, an inert substrate and a cycled tank are usually enough for a thriving, breeding colony. The crystal red shrimp is far more sensitive to water chemistry — it wants soft, acidic water (typically remineralised RO) sitting on an active buffering soil, and it reacts badly to sudden swings. Get those conditions stable and crystals are stunning, but they punish inconsistency in a way cherries never do.

Which should you keep?

Our pick

Pick the cherry shrimp if you want a hardy, affordable, self-sustaining colony with almost no fuss — the right first shrimp for nearly everyone. Pick the crystal red shrimp if you already keep stable soft water and want a premium show shrimp. Frequently asked questions

Are crystal shrimp harder to keep than cherry shrimp?

Yes, noticeably. Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina) are among the hardiest invertebrates and forgive a wide range of stable tap-water parameters. Crystal red shrimp (Caridina) need soft, acidic water, usually made with RO water and an active buffering substrate, plus stable temperatures. They are a step up meant for keepers who already have a stable, cycled tank.

Can I keep cherry shrimp and crystal shrimp in the same tank?

It is not ideal. They want different water: cherries prefer neutral, harder water while crystals want soft, acidic water. They also cross-breed only within their own genus, so they will not hybridise, but the compromise water rarely suits both well. Keep each in its own tuned tank for best results.

Do crystal shrimp breed as easily as cherry shrimp?

Both breed in freshwater, but cherries breed faster and more reliably in a wider range of conditions. Crystal shrimp will breed once their soft, acidic parameters are dialled in and stable, but they are fussier and their colonies grow more slowly.
