The short answer
German blue rams are peaceful dwarf cichlids that fit into a warm, soft-water community. The catch is that their tankmates must share those warm, stable conditions. Good choices include:
- Small peaceful tetras like ember, cardinal or rummynose tetras
- Harlequin rasboras and other calm shoalers
- Sterbai corydoras (a warm-tolerant bottom crew)
- Otocinclus and amano shrimp (though rams may hunt small shrimp)
Match their warmth and calm
Rams need warm water (around 27–29°C) and soft, slightly acidic conditions, so their tankmates must tolerate that heat — which rules out cooler-water fish. Choose calm, non-aggressive species: avoid boisterous barbs, fin-nippers, and larger cichlids that would bully or outcompete a small, gentle ram. Fast feeders can also leave a deliberate ram short of food, so watch that everyone eats.
Set up a stable, planted home
Give rams a well-planted tank of at least 80 litres with caves, driftwood and gentle flow so a pair can claim territory. They are sensitive fish, so a fully cycled, mature aquarium with steady parameters is essential — sudden swings are a common cause of ram losses. Feed a varied, high-quality diet from the fish food hub.
