The short answer
No — goldfish don’t need a heater. Goldfish are cold-water fish, and they actually prefer cooler temperatures than tropical species. In a normal room they’re perfectly comfortable, so a heater is usually unnecessary and, set to tropical warmth, can even shorten their lives. If anything, the mistake is keeping goldfish too warm, not too cold.
Why goldfish prefer it cool
Goldfish thrive around 18–22 °C — roughly room temperature or a little below. Common (single-tail) goldfish tolerate even cooler water and can live in unheated outdoor ponds through cold seasons. Warm, tropical water speeds up their metabolism, which:
- Raises their oxygen demand in water that holds less oxygen when warm
- Increases waste output and appetite
- Can shorten lifespan over time
This is exactly why goldfish don’t belong in a heated tropical community tank.
When a heater might help
There are a few exceptions:
- A very cold room that regularly drops into the low teens or below
- Fancy goldfish (fantails, orandas), which are a little less cold-tolerant and prefer stable water
- Avoiding rapid temperature swings in a poorly insulated space
Even then, a heater set to a low temperature just to prevent extremes is all that’s needed — not tropical heat. Browse options in our heater range if your room genuinely runs cold.
The bigger picture
Temperature is the easy part — the bigger issue people miss is size. Goldfish grow large and produce a lot of waste, so tank size and filtration matter far more than heating. See how big do goldfish get and can goldfish live in a bowl, and keep their water clean with regular maintenance.
